About Maynooth University PhD Scholarship

The ICARUS Climate Research Centre at Maynooth University (“Ollscoil Mhá Nuad”) is excited to announce a prestigious PhD Scholarship opportunity for one exceptional candidate intending to begin their studies in September 2025.

This scholarship is part of a cutting-edge project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), running from 2025 to 2029. The focus of the research will be on event attribution for the island of Ireland. Utilizing methodologies established by the renowned World Weather Attribution (WWA) group, the study will involve retrospective analyses of major climatic extremes in Ireland over the past decade. The aim is to understand the role of human-induced climate change in influencing these events.

The selected PhD candidate will work closely with a diverse team of experts, including Prof. Peter Thorne, a senior postdoctoral researcher, and other colleagues at ICARUS. Collaboration will extend to the WWA group at Imperial College London, offering the candidate a wealth of resources and expertise. Beyond research, the student will have opportunities to participate in community engagement, outreach initiatives, and the broader academic discourse on climate change.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Maynooth University PhD Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Academic Requirements:
